About National Organization for Marriage

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) is a nonprofit organization with a mission to protect marriage and the faith communities that sustain it. NOM serves as a national resource for marriage-related initiatives at the state and local level. For decades, pro-family organizations have educated the public about the importance of marriage and the family, but have lacked the organized, national presence needed to impact state and local politics in a coordinated and sustained fashion. NOM seeks to fill that void, organizing as a

It is a disgrace that the institution of marriage – one of our society’s most important building blocks – is under attack.  Right now President Obama is leading an unprecedented assault on marriage.  He has declared that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, and legislation is moving through Congress to completely repeal DOMA.   The very future of marriage is at stake, and that is why we are recruiting Americans from all walks of life to stand up with us.  Please sign our petition.

As the election season heats up, all eyes will be turned on the GOP presidential race. Will the candidate who goes on to challenge Barack Obama be someone who firmly believes in protecting marriage? That’s what the NOM Marriage Pledge is designed to do—publicly commit Republican presidential candidates to pursuing five critical goals to protect marriage:

    1.  Support sending a federal marriage amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the states for ratification.

    2. Nominate to the U.S. Supreme Court and federal bench judges who are committed to restraint and to applying the original meaning of the Constitution, appoint an attorney general similarly committed, and thus reject the idea our Founding Fathers inserted a right to gay marriage into our Constitution.

    3.  Defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act vigorously in court.

    4. Establish a presidential commission on religious liberty to investigate and document reports of Americans who have been harassed or threatened for exercising key civil rights to organize, to speak, to donate or to vote for marriage and to propose new protections, if needed.

    5.  Advance legislation to return to the people of the District of Columbia their right to vote on marriage.

Floyd Lee Corkins, the man who shot an unarmed security guard at the Family Research Council (FRC) before being subdued, admitted in court that he used the Southern Poverty Law Center's online Hate Map to identify and target his would-be victims at FRC. Corkins had over 50 rounds of ammo and additional magazines on him when he was finally apprehended. And yet SPLC still refuses to take down their online Hate Map, even after it has been clearly shown to have helped a would-be mass murderer plot his massacre.

We DEMAND the SPLC remove its Hate Map IMMEDIATELY.

This Hate Map does not bring hatred to light, it instigates and incites hatred towards the people and organizations it lists, many of whom do not deserve to be designated a "Hate Group" by SPLC in the first place.

The Hate must end. SPLC, take down your hate map.

Of all the scandals plaguing the Obama administration, the revelation that the Internal Revenue Service targeted Tea Party and conservative groups for harassment during the last Presidential election is perhaps the most shocking.

But it pales in comparison to what we have been attempting to expose for over a year: that the IRS is also guilty of leaking our confidential tax return to our opponents at the Human Rights Campaign, during the time its head served as a national co-chair for President Obama's reelection campaign!

Now that the eyes of the nation are fixed on this exploding IRS scandal, this is our opportunity to expose the truth!

Please sign this petition to demand Congress investigate the illegal leaking of NOM's private tax documents and how they came to be released by a national co-chair of President Obama's reelection campaign.

The National Organization for Marriage is petitioning Congress to codify and define marriage once and for all by an amendment to Constitution of the United States. This is the surest way to protect marriage from attacks by radical judges and legislators who respond to the will of the powerful same-sex ‘marriage’ lobby rather than to the will of the people. We need this amendment to firmly protect marriage and prevent a radical redefinition of marriage being foisted on the whole nation.

Reince Priebus has served as the Chairman of the Republican National Committee since January 2011.  In that time, he has made sure that defending marriage as the union of one man and one woman was inserted into the party’s platform.  And recently, in an interview with David Brody, he reiterated that both he and the GOP believe that “marriage is between one man and one woman.”

Please use the form below to send a quick note of thanks to Chairman Priebus for his courageous leadership in defending marriage!

Alaska’s Attorney General, Michael Geraghty, has declared he will do his sworn duty and defend Alaska’s constitutional amendment on marriage, approved by the voters in 1998.  His public commitment stands in stark contrast to activist judges and unprincipled state officials in other states who have abandoned their duty to defend duly enacted marriage laws and state amendments. His integrity and commitment to fulfill his oath of office is commendable, especially in a culture where the historic and common sense definition of marriage is under assault.

The National Organization for Marriage, together with The Manhattan Declaration and Christian Union, is urging pro-marriage citizens to sign this petition of appreciation and gratitude for the decision by World Vision’s Leadership and Board of Directors to reaffirm the sanctity of marriage and the pivotal importance of marriage to Christian tradition and life.

The President of the National Organization for Marriage, Brian Brown, said in a press release: “The Christian view of marriage clearly holds that it is the union of one man and one woman. It was for this reason that many were dismayed by news that World Vision would be compromising its stance upon this Biblical value with a new policy recognizing the validity of ‘marriage’ between same-sex persons. The decision by World Vision to reverse this policy is cause for celebration and congratulation. World Vision has listened to their supporters and congregations worldwide, and chosen to stand by the Christian truth of marriage in spite of what must have been immense pressure from the radical same-sex ‘marriage’ lobby.”

World Vision needs to hear from you today that you appreciate and applaud their choice to stand by the Biblical ideal of marriage. Please sign this petition and share it with your family and friends.

On April 9th, City Councilman Daniel Dromm, in remarks made to the Huffington Post, protested plans of Chick-fil-A to open new locations in his city because its CEO has in the past publicly expressed his own personal belief in marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Speaking to HuffPo, Dromm had this to say:

We don’t need bigots coming to New York City. They are not welcome here unless they can embrace all of New York’s diverse community, including the LGBT community.

More shockingly, Dromm made clear that it was immaterial to him whether these views were public or private, whether they had any impact on the running of a business or were simply personally-held beliefs. HuffPost reported:

Dromm, the city councilman, said there was no place for Chick-fil-A in New York, even if it remains out of the political fray.

"We don’t need bigoted people even keeping their opinions to themselves," he said. "They need to wake up and see reality."

Dromm owes people of faith and other believers in traditional marriage an immediate apology. He has, effectively, told millions of New Yorkers that they are unwelcome in his city!

Send a message to the City Council today demanding that the Council apologize for and expressly condemn Dromm’s remarks which have alienated so many good New Yorkers and made them fear their own city is to become a hostile and unwelcoming place.

Led by Sen. Diane Feinstein, Senate Democrats on the Judiciary Committee have pushed through a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, setting the stage for a showdown on the Senate floor. But Senator Feinstein admits she doesn't have the votes to pass it -- so now reports indicate she's considering attaching it to the Defense Authorization bill, holding marriage hostage on this piece of "must-pass" legislation.
