Last week, we released an updated Key Vote alert, letting Congress know we continue to oppose the deceptively-named “Violence Against Women Act.” The bill has numerous specific flaws, but its basic premise is flawed: that federal agencies are better at prosecuting individual crimes than state authorities. Creating a duplicate scheme for crime enforcement is problematic, and changing how crimes are defined is problematic. VAWA does both, at taxpayers’ expense.
