Sylvia Mathews Burwell | (Secretary of HHS) |
In a resounding victory for religious freedom, first the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby and similar employers stating that they cannot be forced to comply with the federal contraception mandate against their religious beliefs.
Later in the same day the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals granted the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) a last minute emergency injuncture from complying with the Health and Human Services (HHS) Contraception Mandate.
In October 2013, EWTN filed a lawsuit against the mandate and on June 17, U.S. District Court Judge Callie V.S. Granade of Mobile, Ala., ruled against EWTN, prompting the appeal to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
EWTN, the largest religious media network in the world, was founded to uphold the Catholic faith and objects to providing or facilitating these products and practices which violate Church teaching.
The network would have been subjected to more than $35,000 per day in penalties for refusing to comply with the federal contraception mandate which would have gone into effect on July, 1.
Michael Warsaw, CEO of EWTN, noted that it still “remains unclear” whether the Supreme Court’s decisions will address concerns over the “accommodation” for non-profit religious groups.
We ask you to sign this petition to tell Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell to respect religious liberty, exempt EWTN and other non-profit religious organizations from this unjust mandate.
