The Missouri Senate has passed an important resolution (SJR 39) that would allow the people of Missouri to protect religious liberties by amending their state constitution.  Urge the House to pass it as well so the people have the final say whether clergy, churches, and business owners will have their freedom of religion protected.

“No one should be compelled to make a work with their own hands that’s offensive to their beliefs,” Republican sponsor Sen. Bob Onder said during earlier debate on the measure.

This proposed constitutional amendment, if approved by the qualified voters of this state, prohibits the state from imposing a penalty on a religious organization who acts in accordance with a sincere religious belief concerning same sex marriage, which includes the refusal to perform a same sex marriage ceremony or allow a same sex wedding ceremony to be performed on the religious organization's property.  Further, the state cannot penalize an individual who declines, due to sincere religious beliefs, to provide goods of expressional or artistic creation for a same sex wedding ceremony.

As we have seen from events across the country this is not a hypothetical debate.  Bed and Breakfast owners, florists, and bakers have been sanctioned by the state for standing true to their faith and convictions about marriage.

If approved by the voters this constitutional amendment would protect the religious liberties and rights of conscience of not just faith communities and clergy but individual business owners who desire to run their businesses according to the tenets of their faith.

Sign the petition below urging the Missouri House of Representatives to pass this important resolution and allow the people to vote.

The Petition

Pass SJR 39: Let the people vote

I urge you to pass SJR 39 and allow the people the vote to protect the religious liberties of faith communities, clergy, and business owners.  As sponsor Senator Bob Onder said during debate, “No one should be compelled to make a work with their own hands that’s offensive to their beliefs.”

This is not a hypothetical debate – across the country Bed and Breakfast owners, florists, and bakers have been sanctioned by the state for refusing to compromise their faith and convictions about marriage.  This is simply wrong.  No American should be penalized for their faith and commitment to their religious beliefs.

Please pass SJR 39 and send the question to the people.

Thank you.
