The US Senate has just passed disingenuously-named legislation – the “Respect for Marriage” Act – that would impose same-sex marriage on the nation. Right now, gay marriage exists nationwide only because of the US Supreme Court’s illegitimate ruling in the Obergefell v Hodges case (2015). Obergefell negated the votes of over 50 million Americans in three dozen states who went to the polls to define marriage solely as the union of one man and one woman. It also overrode the decision of legislators in many other states to define marriage as one man and one woman. Like the Supreme Court’s illegitimate ruling inventing a constitutional “right” to abortion in Roe v Wade, there was no constitutional basis to a “right” to same-sex marriage. Now that the Supreme Court has recognized their error in Roe, it is highly likely that they will soon recognize their error in Obergefell and rule to reverse the imposition of gay marriage on America. Such a ruling would reinstate traditional marriage laws and amendments across America and return this issue to the states, but the “Respect for Marriage” Act would reimpose gay marriage throughout the country.

The Petition

Do Not Disrespect Marriage And Your Constituents

Dear House Members:

Determining the definition of marriage in America has been one of the most hotly-contested debates in American history. Prior to the US Supreme Court’s illegitimate imposition of gay marriage on the nation in the Obergefell case (2015), voters in some three dozen states had cast ballots to define marriage solely as the union of one man and one woman. Legislators in many other states voted on behalf of their citizens to do the same. Only a small number of states had voters or elected representatives who approved gay marriage. The legal basis for the Obergefell ruling was nonexistent. Just like Roe v Wade which illegitimately invented a “right” to abortion, so too did Obergefell invent a right to same-sex marriage. Now that Roe has been overturned, it is likely that Obergefell will soon be overturned as well.

It is wrong for Congress to attempt to crush the national marriage debate and act to ignore the wishes of over 50 million voters and countless legislators and preemptively impose same-sex marriage on the nation.  The so-called “Respect for Marriage’ Act is actually the Disrespect for Marriage Act because it disrespects the decision of tens of millions of voters and countless legislators and discards the sovereignty of the states.

I urge you to reject this legislation and instead to truly respect voters and state legislators and refuse to impose gay marriage on the nation.
