Like any government agency, the U.S. Postal Service’s attempt to run a profit has been a catastrophe for decades. In 2012 alone, the service (whose workforce is heavily unionized) lost $15.9 billion. Any private sector business showing such an enormous loss on its balance sheet would be shut down or taken over by more competent management.
