Obama's pass from the press

Submitted 9 years ago by ActRight Community

Sometime in the spring of 2007, something strange happened to the Iraqi coverage in the national media — it disappeared. Or rather, as soon as the news ceased to be bad, the media lost interest in covering it. It was not till July, when Michael O'Hanlon reported back from the front that the surge had been working, that the world started to realize what happened. To them, the fact that George W. Bush had succeeded in something was what the press couldn't bear to believe. Something of the sort is happening now in reverse regarding the current Middle East crises, which make Iraq in 2006 seem calm in comparison. This time the press, which can no longer deny that the world has been going to hell since Barack Obama started unleashing his peacemaking powers, is doing its best to insulate him completely from any possible blame for it all. Where Bush was asked every day if he regretted invading Iraq, Obama is never asked if he thinks leaving Iraq had something to do with the chaos engulfing the region, or the vulnerability of citizens here and in Europe to Islamic State-inspired attacks.

It would be hard to measure how many times conservatives have been described as authoritarian. They want to control our lives! Impose their religious beliefs! Etc. Liberal writer Joe Conason, for example, wrote a book titled "It Can Happen Here," about the alleged authoritarian trend under President Bush.

Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus just gave presidential contender Donald Trump a huge vote of confidence in a Washington Post retrospective published Sunday about the Republican Party's hectic 2015: I'm not one of these people that think that Donald Trump can't win a general election. I actually think there is a huge crossover appeal there to people that are disengaged politically that he speaks to.... Donald Trump taps into the culture. Some people in politics don't get it, don't understand it, are frustrated by it. It doesn't matter. He does. [The Washington Post] Priebus' remark comes after December rumors that the party establishment would consider a brokered convention for 2016, as outsiders like Donald Trump and Ben Carson remained popular in the polls months after they were expected to fade. In that light, the notion that Trump would be an appealing general election candidate sounds a little off. As Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio) put it to the Post: "If I said one of the things [Trump] had said about Hispanics, Muslims, or women, I'd have to go into a witness protection program." Julie Kliegman
