The issue of abortion has roiled the United Kingdom, and nations around the world, for many years. While both pro-life and pro-choice adherents hold very different positions, one issue that should unite all citizens is the principle that no woman should be forced to have an abortion against her will. However, recently a British judge did just that – ordering a developmentally disabled woman to undergo a forced abortion against her will and that of her mother, who is the woman's caregiver.

Forced abortions are barbaric, a clear violation of human rights. By allowing this to occur, Britain and the UK align themselves with some of the most notorious countries in the world that also favor forced abortions, including China and North Korea.

The case involves an unnamed disabled woman, said to be in her twenties with the mental capacity of a grade schooler, who is being cared for by her mother, a Catholic from Nigeria with a professional background as a midwife. Both the woman and her mother – who offered to care for and raise the baby along with her daughter – object to abortion as a deep violation of their Catholic faith. The disabled woman's social worker also opposed the forced abortion. The woman is under the care of an NHS Trust, part of the National Health Service. Sadly, NHS officials favored the abortion.

We are appalled that a judge would force a woman to have an abortion against her will, in violation of her religious faith, and that NHS bureaucrats would support this practice. This is especially egregious because there is no evidence that the baby would suffer from any mental or physical handicap and because the child's grandmother had pledged to care for the baby along with her daughter.

While it appears that a British Appeals Court has overruled the judge's ruling and acted to prohibit the abortion, allowing any judge or NHS bureaucrat to force a woman to have an abortion against her will should never be left to the vicissitudes of the legal system. Forced abortion should be prohibited as a matter of law.

Please sign our petition today to urge the UK's political leadership to enact a law to stop this barbaric practice in the United Kingdom.

The Petition

Please act to make forced abortion illegal in the UK

Dear Political Party Leaders of the United Kingdom –

I write to demand that you enact legislation prohibiting forcing a woman to undergo an abortion against her will.

Though abortion has divided the United Kingdom for many years, one issue that should unite all citizens is the principle that no woman should be forced to have an abortion against her will. However, recently a British judge did just that – ordering a developmentally disabled woman to undergo a forced abortion against her will and that of her mother, who is the woman's caregiver.

Forced abortion is a matter of human rights. It must be prohibited. As it sits now, Britain and the UK has aligned itself with some of the most notorious countries in the world that also favor forced abortions, including China and North Korea.

No judge should have the power to ignore the wishes of a pregnant woman, disregard her religious faith, dismiss the assurances of family members that they will help raise the child and instead force the pregnant woman to undergo an abortion against her will.

I demand that you enact a law prohibiting the barbaric practice of allowing forced abortions in the UK!
